If you could offer hope to someone dying from cancer, would you? We all need healthy marrow and blood cells to live. But every year, tens of thousands of people are diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, and other life-threatening diseases that prevent marrow from functioning properly. For many of these patients, a bone marrow transplant may be their best treatment option—or their only hope for a cure. An allogeneic transplant requires healthy, matching cells from another person. Yet 70% of patients who need a transplant do not have a fully matched donor in their family. These patients depend on Be the Match, a nonprofit run by the National Marrow Donor Program, to match them with unrelated donors and save their lives. It’s free and super easy to join the Be the Match registry as a potential donor. After you register online at bethematch.org, Be the Match will mail you a cheek swab kit in the mail. All you have to do is swab your cheek and mail the DNA sample back to them to complete your registration. Because of the genetic complexity of matching donors to patients, it could be weeks, months, or even years before you’re contacted to donate. But taking action today could mean being the match, and saving a life, in the future.
